A Little About Me: | I advise undergraduate students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, pre-law students, and exploratory students. Originally from Iowa, I earned my bachelor's degree from the University of Northern Iowa and my master's degree from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. I have worked at UF since 2000, first as assistant director for experiential education in the Career Resource Center before transitioning to the CLAS Academic Advising Center in 2003. I assist with the advising-related initiatives for new students, including coordination of academic advising at Preview (orientation) for UF's 6,700+ incoming first-year students each year.
I have served on multiple campus committees over the years, including the Machen Florida Opportunity Scholars (MFOS) Steering Committee, Academic Integrity Task Force, and Student Conduct Committee, and have served as a mentor in the Reitz Scholars Program and the University Minority Mentorship Program. I am the past president of SAPLA (the Southern Association of Pre-law Advisors), a member of the board for PLANC (Pre-law Advisors National Council), and have been active in NACADA (National Academic Advising Association). I love helping students to have a successful transition to the University, and some of my recent advising project work involves assessing and working to improve the academic transition of transfer students to UF. I realize UF can seem large and daunting, and I enjoy helping students to feel at ease by showing them there are friendly people here to help. I encourage all students to find an advisor with whom they connect, meet with that advisor regularly, and ask lots of questions. There are many fabulous academic opportunities at UF, and we love to help you find a path that's a great fit for you! |

A Little About Me: | Here's a bit more about me: My husband, daughters and I have lived in Gainesville, FL for 25+ years. Moving here was one of the best decisions we've ever made! It's been a great place for our family to grow and thrive. I earned a dual degree in English and Asian Studies, and have been involved in higher education and student administration for a very long time. I didn't think of myself as a first gen student until a few years ago. I had a lot of support from my parents, but they didn't have many relatable college experiences. My mom is a retired nurse. She earned the RN degree WAY back when the bachelors was not required to be successful in the nursing profession. My dad served in the Air Force, and after that, went straight to the business world. I feel like I figured things out on my own, on campus and with respect to my academic path. One of the things I love about working at a university is having the opportunity to connect and stay connected with students in the younger age cohorts. I hope we can connect so that I can be an advocate and decent mentor during your time at UF. I'd love to help you on your journey. --Judy |

A Little About Me: | I am a Gainesville native and double UF grad, with my only time away from Gainesville being a one-year period when my husband and I lived in North Carolina. We came back to Gainesville after our time in NC and planned to stay "for just a few years." That was in 2005, so I'm pretty sure we are here for the long haul! We have two terrific children and two terrific dogs, one of whom is a certified therapy dog who accompanies me to work periodically to visit with students. I absolutely love working with UF students and feel very fortunate to get to go along with them for part of their academic journey. I am lucky enough to get to teach within the Honors program, and focus my course each term on topics that will help our pre-health population succeed in their long term goals. |

A Little About Me: | I am an archaeologist and Assistant Curator of Archaeology at the Florida Museum of Natural History. I study long-term human-environment interactions, especially those between humans and animals in order to better understand contemporary links between human cultures and biodiversity. Throughout my collegiate education, I benefited tremendously from on-campus mentors advocating for my long-term success as both a student and professional. I am happy to be a part of this program and a resource to first-generation students seeking guidance, advice, or maybe just a friendly chat about things in general while navigating undergraduate education, preparing for advanced degrees, or preparing to enter the work force. |

A Little About Me: | I grew up in south Florida and developed a love for plants and the outdoors in high school. Working with and studying plants and spending time outdoors motivated nearly all of my decisions while working on my undergraduate degree to my PhD. The stress of working on my PhD lead me to focus more on my health and wellness. I love crossfit and weightlifting, and am starting to compete in my first sanctioned competitions just for the fun of it. Lately, my professional focus has turned from plants to supporting early career researchers. I feel that my experience in research allows me to better support those that are pursuing careers in research. Each day I try to be a little better than I was the day before, and I hope I can help others do the same. I'm grateful to those that listen to me and support me. I hope that every student at UF finds the mentors they need to help them build a satisfying life. |

A Little About Me: | I am a lecturer in the Department of Sociology and Criminology & Law. I am a first generation college student who had to navigate the college world from B.A. to Ph.D. on my own. I wish I would have had a mentor who would helped to guide me along the way and avoid some of the pitfalls I fell into. This is why being an advocate for other first generation students is so important to me. I attended UF for undergrad, and then, went off to the University of Cincinnati for my M.S. and the University of Central Florida for my Ph.D. In addition to teaching, I work on research grants surrounding the operation of problem-solving courts and am in the Army Reserves. |

A Little About Me: | My academic career has taken me through quite a few positions that prominently included non-traditional and first-generation students. These include working with active-duty military members and veterans, adults pursuing second-act careers, and first-generation students from traditionally underserved populations. Teaching, coaching, and mentoring these students has been some of the most rewarding work I've ever experienced and I welcome the opportunity to help you on your journey through UF and beyond. My academic background is in the arts: music, theater, visual art, & aesthetics. I've also worked professionally as a copywriter, film critic, retail manager, and bartender in addition to performing in a wide variety of musical styles and contexts. At UF, I have taught courses on The Politics of Bluegrass & Old Time Music, Music & Spirituality, and Romanticism in Popular Culture. I am also a member of the UF Mindfulness team. |

A Little About Me: | I was not only a first-generation student but also, a non-traditional student. I went back to school at the age of 27 with 2 small children, working my way through my associate, bachelor and master degrees all before my youngest turned 12. I am active in my community as a coach and board member in youth sports. In my role at the Career Connections Center I am leading the CliftonStrengths initiative for our department, plan the annual Majors and Minors fair, meet one-on-one with students for career planning, facilitate small group conversations and work with campus partners who provide meaningful experiences for students. When not at work and volunteering in my community, I love to spend time with my family, travel, go to the beach and local springs, spend time outdoors, run stadiums in the UF football stadium, and just about anything that is an adrenaline inducing activity. |

A Little About Me: | Hi, everyone! My name is Jess and I'm a Study Abroad Advisor in the UF International Center, as well as a First Year Florida instructor. Although I'm not a first-generation student, I grew up in a single-parent household with a parent who did not attend college. As such, I experienced many of the challenges first-generation students do - I had to teach myself how to apply for college, complete the FAFSA, navigate on-campus life, etc. I'm happy to now serve as a resource for students facing the same challenges. If you have questions about study abroad (or anything else), please feel free to reach out! I was also the first person in my family to ever travel outside the United States, so I understand the feeling of not knowing how to get help. |

A Little About Me: | I came to the University of Florida in 2017 to direct the new Office of Assessment and Research in its mission to champion a culture of evidence-based decision making for the Division of Student Affairs. Prior to this role I served the University of West Florida for 12 years in a progression of experience including creation of the Outdoor Adventures program, supervision of all Recreational Sports programming, instruction of undergraduate and graduate courses, and management of assessment initiatives for Student Affairs. My leadership style and strategies for building assessment capacity draw from my bachelors in animal behavior, masters in experiential education, and doctorate in physical education and health. Outside of work I enjoy outdoor recreation, music, woodworking, and teaching dad jokes to my daughter. |

A Little About Me: | I have interests in almost every subject and love good conversation. I grew up in a intellectual and artistic family. I work primarily in the arts but l like science, business, psychology, technology politics and you name it. I have lived all over the US and love to travel, I have been to Europe, Asia and Australia, including Tasmania ! I have a wonderful artistic spouse, two adult step children and three grandsons. I adore animals, photography, kids and old folks. I was a first-generation college student who did not do well in high school. After years of bouncing around from job to job I went back to school for theatrical design and did very well. I came form a underprivileged background and earned everything. I have been teaching for almost 40 years now and am still excited about what I do. I also run my own small boutique consulting company that does interesting work and have always been entrepreneurial. I would enjoy meeting any UF student who would like to meet up for lunch or coffee. I have been at UF for 20 years and love it. See you soon. |

A Little About Me: | Greetings! I am a third-year Ph.D. student in the Teachers, Schools, and Society program in the College of Education. As a first-generation college student myself, I understand some of the hurdles one can encounter in an institution as large as UF. In addition, as a husband and as a parent of two children, I have some experience in the whole work-life balancing act. Feel free to reach out! |
